7 Perfect Date Night Movies to Watch at Home with Your Partner

    Or with your situationship.

A good date doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sure, flower arrangements, snazzy outfits, and a reservation at an intimate restaurant can go a long way. But there’s also beauty in simplicity. Sometimes you just need to curl up together with a good movie and a tray of snacks. Whether you’re in the exciting early stages or diligently working to keep that spark alive, a film about the many wonders (and potential pitfalls) of the dating world can send you down memory lane — or remind you just how good you’ve got it.

If you’re looking for movies about all kinds of dates — from the purely accidental to the perfectly plotted — look no further than these romantic titles below.

The Matchmaker's Playbook

In love and in life, a disappointment can simply be a detour on the way to something better. Thanks to an injury that prematurely ends his career, former star NFL recruit Ian Hunter (Nick Bateman) returns to campus in search of a new goal. He starts up Wingmen, Inc., a secret dating service that helps students secure their campus crushes. It’s all going well — that is, until an unpretentious student named Blake Olson (Caitlin Carver) hires Ian for his matchmaking services. His new challenge is tougher than any game he’s ever played on the football field: trying not to fall for a client.

The Perfect Date

Does the perfect date exist? If you ask teenager and Yale University hopeful Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo), he’ll tell you he has an app for that. To save money for college, Brooks launches an app offering his services as the ideal fake date, tailoring his adaptable personality to each person’s needs. But when he begins to develop real feelings for one of his clients, he’s forced to rethink his future. This romantic comedy is based on the novel The Stand-In by Steve Bloom. Laura Marano (The Royal Treatment), Odiseas Georgiadis (Trinkets), Camila Mendes (Do Revenge), and Matt Walsh (A Futile and Stupid Gesture) also star.

Players

Don’t hate the player, hate the game. The dating world is filled with complications, and Mack (Gina Rodriguez) is more than happy to add some of her own to the mix. Mack is a sports journalist living in New York City who uses her interpersonal skills and charm to set up no-strings-attached dates for herself and her friends, including her best friend, Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.). Every hookup is a new adventure, and all is well in the world. That is, until she meets Nick (Tom Ellis), a devilishly handsome war correspondent who — much to her disappointment — matches her “love ’em and leave ’em” energy.

Set It Up

If you’ve ever played matchmaker for your friends, you know how fraught it can get. Now imagine you’re doing so for your boss. And your boss? They’re the worst. Hoping to free up their impossible schedules, personal assistants Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) concoct a plan to get their wildly unpleasant employers, Kirsten (Lucy Liu) and Rick (Taye Diggs), together and off their backs. But carefully crafting dates for a couple in the honeymoon stage results in Harper and Charlie spending a lot of time together … and they sure do seem to enjoy each other’s company (insert epic side-eye here).

Something's Gotta Give

A new romance knows no age limit. Just ask Harry (Jack Nicholson), a charming sexagenarian who solely dates women under 30. During a getaway to the Hamptons with his latest girlfriend, Marin (Amanda Peet), Harry experiences a heart attack and is forced to recover at Marin’s family beach house, where he meets her mother, Erica (Diane Keaton). Harry and Erica initially clash — but Harry soon begins to wonder if there’s something to this whole “dating someone with similar life experience” thing. Or will Erica give in to the advances made by Harry’s attractive younger doctor, Julian (Keanu Reeves)? Find out in director Nancy Meyers’s (It’s Complicated) beloved rom-com.

Terry McMillan Presents: His, Hers & Ours

Every relationship has its hurdles, but trying to tackle them while also dealing with your closest family members is its own challenge. Lesley Ann-Brandt (Lucifer) plays Kelly, a divorced restaurateur and mother to a teenaged son. Taye Diggs (Forever) plays Darius, a widowed entrepreneur and father to a teenaged daughter. When their respective kids start dating, these two single parents are forced to spend time together, and they discover an unexpected spark. Their secret romance steadily becomes harder to hide from their families, and when the time comes to spill the truth, Kelly and Darius must choose how much they’re willing to sacrifice for each other.

The Wrong Paris

Sometimes love sneaks up on you, even when you’re trying to actively avoid it. Miranda Cosgrove (Mother of the Bride) stars in this romantic comedy as Dawn, a Texas girl admitted to art school in France — but she can’t afford to live there. She scores a spot on a popular dating show with an upcoming season set in the City of Light, only to find that the series is actually filming in Paris, Texas — just 45 minutes away from her hometown. Her new plan is to get eliminated fast and pocket the cash for art school — oh, and not fall for the show’s fiery-hot cowboy bachelor Trey (Pierson Fodé).
