Brace yourself for this bomb: The irreverent and popular card game, Exploding Kittens, is getting animated.
An adult animated comedy based on the game and starring Tom Ellis, Lucy Liu and more is coming to Netflix next year. While you wait for the TV series to arrive, you’ll be able to play Exploding Kittens — The Game, an exclusive mobile version of the game launching on Netflix in May. This is Netflix’s first adaptation of this kind.
For the uninitiated, Exploding Kittens is a strategic card game about, well, cats and destruction. Ever played Uno or Old Maid? It’s kind of a combination of the two, but with lots more fur flying through the air.
In the forthcoming animated series, the eternal struggles between Heaven and Hell comes down to Earth as God and the Devil inhabit the bodies of rotund house cats. The rest of the voiceover cast includes Abraham Lim, Ally Maki, Mark Proksch and Sasheer Zamata. This pet project hails from showrunners Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman, while adult-animation veterans Mike Judge and Greg Daniels of King of the Hill fame are set to executive produce.
Netflix’s version of Exploding Kittens — The Game will be available in over 30 languages and will feature the same great deck-based gameplay that has players drawing cards while aiming to avoid the Exploding Kitten. Players will also get exclusive cards in the form of Radar and Flip Flop. Radar will reveal the location of the Exploding Kitten closest to the top of the card deck, while Flip Flop will reverse the order of the cards in the deck being played. Both will be additions to your devious arsenal of anti-explosive kitten weaponry. Even better: The entire game will be free for Netflix members with no ads or in-app purchases.
Future updates featuring content from the animated series will also be free. That means if you’re “feline” frisky toward anyone introduced in the show, you’ll be able to play with cards featuring your new favorite characters as the cards will be updated with artwork and imagery from the Netflix series.
Can’t wait to sink your teeth into Exploding Kittens? Grab a little catnip and get cozy, because the series is set to launch in 2023.
