Are you a good witch or a bad witch? There’s no wrong answer when magic is in the air and you’re looking to commune with the spirits. Witches and magic practitioners of all kinds have double, double toil and troubled their way onto screens since movies were invented. From Margaret Hamilton’s OG Wicked Witch of the West in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz to Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s cursed margarita-drinking sisters in Practical Magic and Anya Taylor-Joy’s wide-eyed neophyte in Robert Eggers’s The Witch — there’s no one right way to cast a spell on an audience.
The magically inclined heroes (and villains) in these movies and series on Netflix range from eager pupils of the dark arts to legendary grimoire masters. Which witch do you want to watch? Read on to learn more.
Always a Witch
Carmen Eguiluz (Angely Gaviria) is set to burn at the stake during the Spanish Inquisition in 1646. But after striking a deal with a shadowy wizard, Aldemar the Immortal (Luis Fernando Hoyos), the young witch is transported to 2019, where she’s tasked with a strange mission. Unable to use her magic in the 21st century, Carmen is forced to make new connections in an unfamiliar world to survive — and hopefully return home. This two-season Colombian drama was created by Ana María Parra (Fugue State 1986).
Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches
Based on author Anne Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy, this supernatural horror series follows Alexandra Daddario’s Dr. Rowan Fielding, a pediatric neurosurgeon who learns she’s the heir to the powerful Mayfair witch dynasty. But it’s not all magic tricks and family reunions: Rowan and the other Mayfairs are haunted by an ominous spirit and lorded over by the Talamasca, a secret society that researches and monitors the paranormal, including witches, vampires, werewolves, and more.
Charmed
After their mother dies, sisters Macy (Madeleine Mantock), Mel (Melonie Diaz), and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) learn that they are powerful witches known as the Charmed Ones. Aided by their adviser, Harry Greenwood (Rupert Evans), and using the “power of three,” the sisters are tasked with harnessing their abilities in order to save the world from sinister forces. But to do that, they’ll first have to figure out how to be a family. This four-season fantasy drama is a reboot of the beloved 1998 series of the same name.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Half-human, half-witch Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) has a hellish choice to make on her upcoming 16th birthday: She can either vow allegiance to the Dark Lord or let down her magical family. Sabrina balances two schools — small-town Baxter High and the magical Academy of the Unseen Arts — and two interested suitors — her wholesome human boyfriend, Harvey (Ross Lynch), and a charming warlock, Nick (Gavin Leatherwood). She also struggles to stay true to her convictions in this supernatural horror series based on the eponymous comics.
Coven of Sisters
This Spanish drama takes place in 1609 and follows a group of teenagers accused of witchcraft by a malicious judge, Rostegui (Alex Brendemühl). He tortures the suspected enchantresses to uncover what they know about the akelarre, a ceremony that’s said to summon the devil and initiate his most loyal servants. One of the accused, Ana (Amaia Aberasturi), concocts a clever plan to attempt to stay their execution. But can she harness Rostegui’s fear of the witches’ Sabbath to save herself and her friends?
A Discovery of Witches
It’s not unusual for witches to run with other magical creatures. This romantic fantasy series, based on author Deborah Harkness’s All Souls books, weaves a reality-altering love story between a witch, Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), and a vampire, Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode). They’re accidentally thrust together after Diana discovers a bewitched manuscript. In this magical world, vampires and witches are enemies, but Matthew and Diana feel an instant, supernatural draw to each other that transcends generational bad blood.
Legacies
Tune into Legacies if you want your witch watch to have a side of, well, everything else. This four-season fantasy drama takes place in The Vampire Diaries universe. It follows Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell), a vampire-werewolf-witch tribrid who’s the first of her kind. Hope enrolls at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, where headmaster Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) helps young supernatural creatures learn to control their powers — and fight every paranormal threat that comes their way.
Luna Nera
A powerful group of witches resides in a hidden city and protects each other from outside forces in this six-episode Italian fantasy romance series based on Tiziana Triana’s book Le città perdute. Just outside Rome during the 17th century, teenager Ade (Antonia Fotaras) learns about her destiny among a coven of secretive witches. But will her growing connection with the skeptical scholar Pietro (Giorgio Belli) — whose father, Sante (Giandomenico Cupaiuolo), leads a group of witch hunters — be her new family’s undoing?
Wicked: For Good
Wicked: For Good is the sequel to 2024’s Wicked and follows two of cinema’s most famous witches, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good — aka Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) — on their journey to save Oz. Elphaba now lives in exile as a resistance leader, while Glinda works with the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) to subjugate the land’s sentient Animals. Can Elphaba and Glinda’s life-changing friendship weather the storm, especially when a little girl from Kansas makes her debut in Oz?
WITCH WATCH
Nico Wakatsuki (voiced by Rina Kawaguchi) is your average teenage witch. After completing her training in a magical land, she returns home and moves in with her childhood friend, Morihito Otogi (Ryōta Suzuki), a humanoid ogre. Nico also chooses Morihito as her witch’s familiar and hopes that spending more time together will cause him to fall in love with her. But does Morihito reciprocate her feelings? This 25-episode anime is based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kenta Shinohara.
The Worst Witch
Based on Jill Murphy’s beloved books, this four-season feel-good series follows Mildred Hubble (Bella Ramsey), a clumsy young witch from a non-magical family. After she has a run-in with another witch, Maud Spellbody (Meibh Campbell), Mildred is ushered into an exciting, magical new world. She enrolls at Cackle’s Academy, a boarding school where young witches learn to control their powers. Mildred makes plenty of friends and a couple of worthy frenemies — and has to work overtime to keep herself in headmistress Miss Cackle’s (Clare Higgins) good graces.
