Seo Mi-rae, an overworked webtoon producer played by K-pop star and BLACKPINK member Jisoo, only has a few hours to herself each day. So the last thing she wants is to waste that precious time on mediocre first dates. But when she gets a chance to escape reality thanks to a virtual dating service that sends her on a series of fantastical romances, she realizes maybe love is worth chasing after all. The romantic K-drama Boyfriend on Demand, from director Kim Jung-sik (Strong Girl Nam-soon), also stars Seo In-guk, Yoo In-na, and Ha Young.

Boyfriend on Demand is a story about the personal growth of Mi-rae, who longs for love and the dopamine rush it brings, but finds dating challenging,” Jisoo tells Netflix. “It is a bubbly romantic comedy [that] will be a particularly delightful treat for anyone who feels worn down by the monotony of the daily grind.”

What happens in Boyfriend on Demand?

To webtoon producer Seo Mi-rae (Jisoo), romance just isn’t worth it. After spending every day on the grind, she barely has the energy to take care of herself. Why bother spending her precious time off doing something as unrewarding as dating when there’s a new zombie show to watch and a bubble bath to be had? But Mi-rae’s POV on finding love takes a turn when she’s introduced to Boyfriend on Demand, a virtual-dating subscription service that’s more lifelike than any game she’s ever played. As Mi-rae goes on a series of perfect fantasy dates — falling for a secret agent, romancing a royal in the Joseon period, having a meet cute in midair — she remembers how wonderful it is to feel a spark.

Meanwhile, back in the drudgery of real life, Mi-rae’s new work assignment has her staying late at the office alongside surly, self-centered producer Park Kyeong-nam (Seo), who’s been under her skin since Day 1. As the two spend more time together on the job, Mi-rae notices a softer side to Kyeong-nam that intrigues her. But can anything really compare to the whirlwind romances she’s experiencing in the virtual world? As she explores the bounds of reality versus make-believe on her journey toward love, Mi-rae must figure out if she prefers the perfect fantasy — or an imperfect reality.
