What do you get when you take the concept of Jumanji but make it twisted, dark and gory? Choose or Die. The new Netflix movie comes out April 15 and stars Asa Butterfield as Isaac and Iola Evans as Kayla. The two friends share an interest in games and programming, and when Kayla finds an old 1980s computer game with a massive cash prize, she knows she has to try for it. For a tech-savvy student in dire need of money, it’s a no-brainer. However, the game not only makes the player choose harrowing things or die but also seeps deeper and deeper into Kayla’s life. Outside of Butterfield and Evans, the rest of the cast round out a psychological thriller that delivers real-life immersion that VR could never give them.

Asa Butterfield in 'Choose or Die'

Asa Butterfield (Isaac)

Isaac is a programmer and game designer who spends his time making characters and playing games. He has a little safe haven for programmers and is the one who came into possession of CURS>R first. It’s a cursed game with a punny title, but that’s about all that’s funny about it. Isaac is a good friend to Kayla, and the two try to figure out how the heck to stop the life-or-death choices it’s forcing Kayla to make. If you’re going to recognize anyone from this cast, it will most likely be Asa Butterfield. Not only did he have big roles in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Ender’s Game and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, he also stars as Otis in Sex Education

Iola Evan in 'Choose or Die'

Iola Evans (Kayla)

Iola Evans plays Kayla, a struggling student who keeps to herself and works for a cleaning service in fancy office buildings. Her mother and Isaac are the only people she interacts with in a positive way. She has dreams of becoming a real, full-time programmer but is a bit disillusioned by her current status and life. Unfortunately, she falls victim to CURS>R in Choose or Die. Evans has booked some high-profile jobs in the past few years, playing Callie in The 100 and Ryma in Carnival Row, as well as a starring role in Octoroon at the National Theatre in London.

Eddie Marsan (Hal)

Kicking off the movie, Eddie Marsan plays Hal. His story sets up the dire consequences of CURS>R, even if the player doesn’t lead with ill intentions. Marsan has made a name for himself in such films as V for Vendetta, Mission: Impossible III, Hancock, Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, War Horse and so many more.

Angela Griffin in 'Choose or Die'

Angela Griffin (Thea)

Angela Griffin plays the part of Thea, Kayla’s mother, who doesn’t seem to take care of Kayla the way Kayla cares for her. Illness and addiction appear to be the main causes of Thea's downtrodden life, but her love for Kayla is seen through her constant viewing of old home videos and how life used to be. Griffin is a British actress with many a TV credit in shows like Midsomer Murders and Harlots, along with the TV movie Help.

Kate Fleetwood (Laura)

Kate Fleetwood plays Laura, Hal’s wife. She doesn’t appear in much of the first half of the movie, but she and her son get into big arguments, much to Hal’s aggravation. And unfortunately for her, Hal has now started CURS>R. Fleetwood is most recently known for her portrayal of Liandrin Guirale in The Wheel of Time but has also played Queen Luna in Fate: The Winx Saga and has appeared in Harlots. She also has a theater résumé and was nominated for a Tony Award in 2008 for her role of Lady Macbeth in Macbeth

Ryan Gage in 'Choose or Die'

Ryan Gage (Lance)

Ryan Gage portrays Lance, aka the degrading and creepy “neighbor” to Kayla. He makes gross advances on Kayla and is threatening to her and her mother’s well-being. He’s menacing, and his intentions don’t need to be spelled out in order to make viewers’ skin crawl. Gage's ability to really nail down Major Creep is due in large part to his experience in the theater. He’s appeared in Macbeth, Spring Awakening and Hamlet, to name a few. He’s also Alfrid Lickspittlein the Hobbit film series.
