There’s certainly a current interest in morally gray characters and cliff-hanger endings that lead to sequels in the media. But when the real world gets bleak, and the headlines show real-life villains going unchecked, you may find satisfaction in a story where the bad guys get what’s coming to them. Reassurance that sometimes good does, in fact, triumph over evil.
A surefire place to turn for such stories is movies and shows where the villains see the gratifying consequences of their evil actions. Obviously, we’re not here to spoil any endings, so we won’t tell you how these narratives resolve. But you can rest easy that sweet justice will be served. So sit back and enjoy the closure of a well-earned downfall with these watches.

Apex
This survival thriller set in the Australian wilderness stars Charlize Theron as Sasha, a grieving climber whose camping trip turns into a nightmare when a demented outdoorsman, Ben (Taron Egerton), targets her as his prey in a ritualistic hunt. An adventure enthusiast, Sasha uses her unique skills to outwit Ben as they rush through river rapids, waterfalls, rock faces, and forests. What she soon learns is that she isn’t Ben’s first victim, and he’s gotten very good at his game. Enjoy the thrills of their cat-and-mouse chase even more knowing that Ben has most definitely met his match.
Carry-On
Taron Egerton makes this list more than once, this time as the good guy to Jason Bateman’s bad guy. Egerton plays TSA agent Ethan working during the holiday rush and hoping to get ahead in his job. He’s contacted by a mysterious traveler (Bateman), who blackmails him into working the baggage scanner so that Ethan can usher a bag through that contains a deadly weapon. The Traveler speaks to Ethan as he works, taunting him for his lack of career success and foiling his plans to prevent this terrorist attack. Determined not to fail when it counts most, Ethan pursues the Traveler straight into danger, ready to outwit the evil genius.
Lou
Lou (Allison Janney) might initially seem like the bad guy in this gritty, rain-soaked action movie. She has loner tendencies and a gruff personality, but the truth is she’s been trained to be hard after a career in the CIA. Lou jumps into action when her neighbor, Hannah (Jurnee Smollett), comes to her in the middle of a strong storm saying her abusive ex-husband, Philip (Logan Marshall-Green), has kidnapped her daughter. Philip was once a Green Beret, and he’s prepared — but Lou has more than a few skills of her own. Get ready for some satisfying surprise twists and a showdown worth waiting for.
Man on Fire
The nice thing about a revenge series is that when the final episode comes around, the bad guys’ punishment feels all the more justified. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II keeps that flame of vengeance alive as John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary who takes on a new job at the request of an old friend, Paul Rayburn (Bobby Cannavale). When Rayburn and his family are the target of an attack, it’s up to Creasy to protect their teenage daughter, Poe (Billie Boullet), while tracking down the perpetrators. His investigation leads him to some seedy places and eventually to the villains who committed the heinous act. They find out that underestimating Creasy is a big mistake.
Midnight Mass
It may be hard to choose which sinister character from this horror series most deserves a fitting ending. Created and directed by Mike Flanagan, this spooky story takes place on Crockett Island, an isolated enclave where Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) returns after years away. He reconnects with his childhood sweetheart but notices a change in his hometown. The people’s religious fervor seems to have increased with the arrival of a young priest, Father Paul Hill (Hamish Linklater). Bev Keane’s (Samantha Sloyan) zealous bullying especially disturbs Riley. Mysterious — and supernatural — events begin to occur, leading to a reckoning for the entire island.
The Mother
Jennifer Lopez is a mother on a mission, and she’s very good with a gun. She’s a former spy and sharpshooter turned FBI informant known only as “the Mother.” To keep her daughter, Zoe (Lucy Paez), safe from two dangerous men (Joseph Fiennes and Gael García Bernal) — either of whom could be her daughter’s father — she sends Zoe into witness protection with a foster family. But it’s only a matter of time before the bad men come looking for the Mother and use her daughter as bait. Unluckily for them, her aim’s only gotten sharper with time.
Outlander
With its eight seasons, Outlander offers new villains to despise in every new adventure of Clan MacKenzie. Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) travels through magical stones in 1945 Scotland and finds herself 200 years in the past. Stranded, Claire marries Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) for his clan’s protection. The two fall in love and navigate history together in real time. There are many evildoers to choose from, including one of television’s most vile, Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall (Tobias Menzies), whose deserved reckoning is oh, so satisfying.
Rebel Ridge
When those with power abuse it, especially at the expense of the most vulnerable, it feels that much sweeter when they receive their comeuppance. Former Marine Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) is trying to prevent his arrested cousin from being taken to a prison where he’ll be in danger. He collects the bail money necessary to get him out, but as he’s biking to the station to pay the fee, he’s stopped by a couple of small-town cops looking for someone to harass. They take his money, passing it to the corrupt police chief, Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson), and use a legal loophole to keep it for themselves. What none of them know is that Terry has a very specific kind of training, which makes him a formidable threat.
The Rip
Without ruining the many twists and turns of this crime thriller, let’s just say the guilty get theirs. Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck) lead the Miami Tactical Narcotics Team. They check out a tip about a safe house with a stash of drug money and discover a lot more cash than they expected. It’s enough cash to make even the cleanest of cops consider skimming off the top. Unable to leave the premises until they’ve counted every dollar, they start to look at each other with suspicion as the night grows more dangerous. The dirty cops aren’t easy to identify, and you’ll be guessing who to trust right up until the end.
Wayward
Police officer Alex Dempsey (Mae Martin) and his pregnant wife, Laura (Sarah Gadon), move to Tall Pines, a small town with overly friendly townspeople and an academy for troubled youth. The institution is run by Evelyn (Toni Collette), a mysterious and influential leader in Tall Pines who has a unique relationship with Laura. When Alex runs into some students, they beg him to look into the disturbing practices at the school and to help them escape. Alex makes more enemies than he realizes by investigating Tall Pines Academy, which leads to a mixed bag of clean endings and newly begun madness.
The Woman in Cabin 10
If you’re tired of seeing rich bad guys get away with everything, you’ll have a great time with this murder mystery set on a luxury yacht. Journalist Lo Blacklock (Keira Knightley) is invited to join the upscale sailing trip of billionaires Anne (Lisa Loven Kongsli) and Richard Bullmer (Guy Pearce). Anne is dying and wants Lo to report on her charitable foundation. She also divulges that when she dies, she plans to donate her considerable fortune. One night, Lo witnesses a woman being tossed overboard. The next day, all passengers are accounted for, and Lo’s sanity is questioned. She investigates alone as Richard and his guests look down on her. They’ll all learn in the end that money won’t save them from repercussions — the wealthy just have more to lose.
