A new generation of Hillman College students arrived on campus in Season 1 of A Different World, and soon, their education will continue. The sequel series from showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride has officially been renewed for Season 2.

“We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hardworking crew,” Pride exclusively tells Tudum. “It's so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience.”

A Different World Season 1 launched on Sept. 24 with honors, making the Netflix English TV Top 10 list. “It’s because of our incredible fans that we've received such a swift Season 2 pickup! You all have watched, rewatched, posted about, created content around, and hosted events for our show. Your support, passion, and love mean the absolute world,” Pride says. “From the passionate pleas for their favorite ’ships to feeling seen by a particular character to uncovering well-laid Easter eggs, the conversations fans have been having are so rich and joyful. And I love that audiences are watching it together — parents with children, college friends, and extended family — all enjoying it in community.”

Executive producer and director Debbie Allen can’t wait for the next chapter of A Different World. “Yay! Hallelujah! The people and Netflix have spoken. A Different World brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and HEART,” she says. “Thank you for getting us into the Top 10 worldwide! And now, gear up! We’re coming back at you with Season 2!”

Looking ahead, Pride promises “more Hillman, more college life, more friendship, more romance, more Black joy, and more HBCU greatness” in A Different World Season 2. You can also expect answers to some of your most burning questions following Deborah Wayne’s (Maleah Joi Moon) first year at Hillman. “Of course, we left Season 1 with quite a few cliffhangers that we must address in Season 2,” says Pride.

While you wait for classes to reconvene, study up on everything there is to know about A Different World’s renewal and check back here for more news as it’s announced.

What will A Different World Season 2 be about?

After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a “new year, new me” attitude, only to find themselves faced with past decisions, uncertain futures, new loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose … all while, of course, getting themselves into a whole lot of new mess.

When will A Different World Season 2 be released?

The show has only just been renewed for another school year, so there’s no release date yet. Keep checking back here for major updates coming from campus.

What happened in A Different World Season 1?

A lot! The sequel series follows Deborah, the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), as she enters her first year at Hillman College. In the shadow of her well-meaning but sometimes overbearing parents, Deborah attempts to build her own legacy at the HBCU. As she spreads her wings as a young adult, Debo builds deep bonds with fellow Hillmanites — Rashida (Alijah Kai), Hazel (Kennedi Reece), Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall), and Kojo (Chibuikem Uche) — all of whom navigate their own academic and interpersonal struggles. Deborah also rekindles a romance with a special someone from her past, football superstar Shaquille (Cornell Young IV), and explores a new connection with upperclassman Ellington (Vincent Jamal Hooper).

But there’s more to the sequel series than the new generation. Beloved characters from the original series return as parents, professors, administrators, and esteemed alumni to help dig Hillman out of a financial hole and prove that you never fully graduate from personal drama.
