In spite of his very best efforts, cantankerous Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) remains employed by the police department of Edinburgh, Scotland — and now, he’s coming back for another season of Dept. Q, the hit mystery series from creator Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit).

Also returning? The crew of misfit investigators he built over the course of the first season, including Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose, and Jamie Sives as Hardy. And, of course, it wouldn’t be Dept. Q without the series’ other protagonist: Edinburgh itself, where production is now underway. You can head right here to learn who will be joining the department in Season 2.

“I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Dept. Q’s storylines,” Goode says in a statement to Netflix. “We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank. I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!”

“We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at Dept. Q,” Netflix executives Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin say in a statement. “Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2 … Edinburgh, we’re back.”

What is Dept. Q Season 2 about?

DCI Carl Morck heads up the maverick Dept. Q from the basement of an Edinburgh police station, charged with cases previously deemed unsolvable. This darkly humorous, propulsive show delivers all the pleasures of a procedural, but takes us into the complex mysteries not just of the cases but of the detectives themselves.

Based on the novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, Dept. Q was a hit upon release in 2025: Season 1 spent six weeks in the Global Top Ten shows on Netflix

“This season, Carl and his band of misfits tackle a terrible crime hidden in the highest echelons of Scottish society,” executive producer Rob Bullock said in a statement upon start of production. “It is a story for our times: rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law. Carl, of course, knows otherwise.”

New cast members include Aisling Franciosi, Greg Wise, Nicholas Rowe, Tony Curran, Hamish Clark, Alex Ferns, Ross Anderson, Rebecca Root, Isla Johnston, and Amy Brenneman. You can head right here to learn more.

When will Dept. Q Season 2 be on Netflix?
