Has a group text ever changed the course of your life?

Just ask Kevin Hart’s (Lift, Me Time, The Man from Toronto) character in the new comedy 72 Hours, from director Tim Story (Barbershop, Think Like a Man, Ride Along). Now streaming on Netflix, the film stars Hart as Joe, a 40-year-old advertising executive who accidentally gets invited to a Miami bachelor party with a group of Gen Zers.

The crew of twentysomethings who inadvertently add Joe to their weekend plans include a few familiar faces: Mason Gooding (Scream 7) as Mason, the groom-to-be; Marcello Hernández (Saturday Night Live) as Mason’s childhood friend Nick; Ben Marshall (Saturday Night Live) as their broken-hearted friend Hunter; and Kam Patterson (Saturday Night Live), who makes his feature film debut as Freshman, who earned his nickname from repeating his first year of college.

Four men, including Kevin Hart, sit on a messy dock by water and palm trees, surrounded by trash and cans, looking tired after a party. Text: "Kevin Hart 72 Hours, Only on Netflix, 24 July."

So what can viewers expect from the film, written by Matt Mider, Kevin Burrows, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg? Marshall sums it up succinctly: “Sex, drugs, and Kam Patterson — all you could ever want.”

What is 72 Hours about?

The film follows a 40-year-old advertising executive (Hart) who’s been told by his bosses he’s lost his pulse on youth culture. He hopes to save his flailing career by joining a group of twentysomethings on a wild three-day bachelor party, after he’s inadvertently added to their group text.

For Gooding, the film helps bridge the gap between Gen Z and older generations through humor. “72 Hours offers an opportunity to take a look at the generational divide and bring us a little bit closer with every joke or heartfelt moment,” he tells Tudum.

How long is the 72 Hours movie runtime?

You can cram in 72 Hours-worth of madness in just an hour and 45 minutes.

Who’s in the 72 Hours cast?

Established and rising stars have joined Hart for this Miami-set comedy, including:

  • Mason Gooding (Scream 7, Y2K, Love, Victor
  • Marcello Hernández (Saturday Night Live, Happy Gilmore 2
  • Ben Marshall (Saturday Night Live, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain)

  • Zach Cherry (Severance, Fallout, You)

  • Andy Garcia (Ocean’s 11, Landman)
  • Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another, Straw

Working on 72 Hours, which was filmed in 2025, was a golden opportunity for Marshall to build a stronger rapport with his Saturday Night Live co-stars Hernández and Patterson. By the end of the summer, Marshall and Patterson joined Hernández as full-time cast members.

“I knew it would be fun hanging out with Marcello [Hernández] all summer, but it was so fun getting to know Kam [Patterson],” Marshall recalls. “At the end of the summer, we both got added to the cast of SNL, which was crazy. Now we will have days at work where we see each other and are like, ‘Remember when we were washed up on a beach in Miami with Kevin Hart?’ It feels like a weird dream we had.”

Who is the creative team behind 72 Hours?

Hart and Story produced the film alongside John Davis, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald, Luke Kelly-Clyne, Bryan Smiley, and Will Packer.

Gooding credits Story as a trusting director who created a collaborative environment, allowing him to thrive as an artist. “I can hardly think of a moment on set where I didn’t feel empowered to perform at the best of my ability,” Gooding says, “but I have a wealth of experiences on set where I was pushed naturally to find creative and compelling ways to push the narrative forward in accordance with Tim’s vision.”

Marshall echoes that sentiment, calling Story “the best” to work with. “[He’s] so chill, so easygoing. He has such a natural feel for comedy and embraced all of our improv and [ideas about] how we could inject ourselves into the characters.”

How does 72 Hours end?

This article contains major character or plot details.

After a wild bachelor weekend that includes a mega-yacht party gone wrong, stolen cocaine, a kidnapping, and an intense showdown with a surprisingly sensitive drug lord (played by Andy Garcia), Joe ends those unforgettable 72 hours with new friendships solidified. The crew — which includes Mason (Gooding), Nick (Hernández), Hunter (Marshall), and Freshman (Patterson) — reunites three weeks later for Mason and Emily’s (Amenah) wedding, where it’s revealed that the Miami trip has had a positive impact on the group.

Joe and Jennifer (Taylor) are engaged, Mason is more relaxed, Joe has started his own advertising business, and Nick now works for Joe after helping him secure a major campaign. Joe even leads an emotional check-in after refusing to participate during their bizarre Miami adventure. We end with the gang sharing how they’re doing: Mason feels married, Nick feels employed, Hunter feels out of his slump, Freshman feels “married,” and Joe feels he’s going to plan his own bachelor party soon.
