8 Sports Romance Shows to Stream for Competition and Courtship - Netflix Tudum
What’s a more nerve-wracking situation: an all-or-nothing championship game or a potentially life-altering love triangle? And what’s a more satisfying ending: a well-deserved win or a happily ever after? Thanks to these sports romance stories, viewers needn’t choose between the two.
In these movies and shows, both genres team up to offer nail-biting matchups, heart-fluttering meet cutes, thrilling buzzer-beaters, and messy entanglements. Plus, they explore the worlds of competitive rowing, ice dancing, figure skating, basketball, and wrestling, with athletes ranging from high school hobbyists to seasoned professionals. No matter which team wins onscreen, the real victory belongs to the viewers.
Crew Girl
Meet Teagan (Miku Martineau), a gifted 16-year-old single sculler forced to relocate to the East Coast with her mom (Jessica Paré). She enrolls at Easton Prep, a prestigious school that doesn’t have a girls’ rowing team. Her only way onto the water? Taking the helm as coxswain for Easton’s notoriously chaotic boys’ varsity crew. As Teagan fights to reclaim her rowing dreams, she finds herself caught between two boys in her boat: the school’s golden boy, Josh (Sam Braun), and the quiet local Dillinger (Kyle Clark).
Finding Her Edge
Based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s young adult novel of the same name, this young adult series stars Madelyn Keys as Adriana Russo, an ice dancer training for the World Championships with new partner, Brayden (Cale Ambrozic). In order to save the Russo family rink from financial ruin, the duo pretends to be a couple off the ice to secure a crucial sponsorship. But Adriana still has feelings for her former partner and first love, Freddie (Olly Atkins). Season 2 is on the way.
GLOW
Travel back to 1980s Los Angeles with Alison Brie, who stars in this dramedy as Ruth, an out-of-work actress who finds one last chance for stardom in the glitter-and-spandex world of women’s wrestling. Betty Gilpin, Marc Maron, Sunita Mani, and Geena Davis are also in the Emmy-winning dramedy inspired by the short-lived ’80s show Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Throughout its three seasons, its characters discover that romance is often worth fighting for.
Olympo
This Spanish young adult series stars Clara Galle as Amaia, a perfectionist swimmer who trains at CAR Pirineos, the high-performance sports center where the country’s top athletes train. The eight episodes track Amaia and her fellow elite athletes as they push their bodies to the limit and sacrifice their lives for their sport. Of course, during their downtime, these ambitious and disciplined teens are entangled in steamy and messy romances.
Running Point
Kate Hudson is the queen of the court as Isla Gordon, a reformed party girl who is unexpectedly appointed head of the family business — which happens to be one of the most famous professional basketball franchises in the country. Isla tries to outmaneuver chaos in both the locker room and the boardroom while debating whether to pursue a romance with her team’s head coach, Jay Brown (Jay Ellis). Brenda Song, Justin Theroux, Max Greenfield, and Ray Romano are also in the series.
Spinning Out
Kaya Scodelario stars in this show as Kat Baker, a figure skater whose dreams of competing in the Olympics are dashed after she suffers a serious injury. The longtime solo athlete is given the opportunity to restart her career as a pairs skater with Justin (Evan Roderick), who’s notorious for being unable to keep a partner. Even more so, Kat attempts to do it all while keeping her struggle with bipolar disorder a secret.
The Winning Try
Here’s a Korean drama that scores with heart. Yoon Kye-sang (The Frog, Chocolate) plays Ju Ga-ram, a rugby star who falls from grace due to a doping scandal. He returns to his alma mater to coach his old team, a group of underdogs who work hard to compete in the National Sports Festival but always come in last. Come for Ga-ram’s journey of purpose and self-discovery; stay for the growth, redemption, and romances of the Hanyang High School teens.
Zero Chill
In this teen drama, Grace Beedie and Dakota Benjamin Taylor play the athletic MacBentley twins — sister Kayla (Beedie) is a figure skater, and brother Mac (Taylor) is an ice hockey player. When Mac is offered a spot at a prestigious hockey academy, the entire family relocates from Canada to England — a change that forces Kayla to leave everything behind and find her place on the ice again. Meanwhile, her superstar sibling hits it off with Sky (Jade Ma), a new friend with a secret.
