While there are many people who’d love to be gifted with heroic abilities, it stands to reason that there are probably some who aren’t totally suited for the job. Enter The WONDERfools.

Set in 1999, when Y2K fears were at an all-time high, The WONDERfools is a Korean series about a motley crew of awkward, ordinary citizens who suddenly gain superpowers. This comedic, action-packed adventure sees the group cause chaos as they clumsily accept their new “hero” roles and attempt to take on the villains threatening the peace of Haeseong City.

Who’s in The WONDERfools?

Director Yoo In-sik of Extraordinary Attorney Woo reunites with actor Park Eun-bin, who starred as the titular neurodivergent attorney. In The WONDERfools, however, she plays Eun Chae-ni, who’s suddenly swept up in an unexpected incident and acquires powers. She’s joined by Cha Eun-woo (True BeautyRookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung), who plays Lee Woon-jung, a specially appointed civic servant who approaches a series of mysterious disappearance cases with deep suspicion. Choi Dae-hoon, Im Seong-jae, Kim Hae-sook, and Son Hyun-joo round out the cast.

In the weeks leading up to the turn of the millennium, the small Korean town of Haeseong City is gripped by a series of unsettling events. People are vanishing without a trace, and an eerie new church is taking hold — a chilling echo of the horrors the town thought it had long ago buried. But for The WONDERfools’ trio of ordinary misfits, they’re more concerned with their own issues, until they wake up with newfound superpowers and discover that they’re the only ones who can save their town.
